You'd be a fool to miss this week's comics, as calendar girl Chynna Clugston-Major returns with another BLUE MONDAY, and Judd Winick joins the Vertigo pack with his own spin on the vampire myth.

Welcome to the Shipping Forecast, Ninth Art's pick of the best and most notable new releases hitting comic stores each week.

COMIC OF THE WEEK:

BLUE MONDAY: NOBODY'S FOOL (Oni Press)
Why is it so difficult for most comic creators to write convincing teenagers? Nine times out of ten they end up coming across as tall toddlers or shrunken adults. That's just one of the many reasons why Chynna Clugston-Major's BLUE MONDAY is so much fun. If NOBODY'S FOOL is as good as the previous two holiday-themed BLUE MONDAY specials, then you can expect witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud jokes, gorgeous artwork, and some of the strangest plot twists in comics. With NOBODY'S FOOL focusing on St Patrick's Day and April Fool's Day, Clugston-Major has got more than enough fuel to keep NOBODY'S FOOL moving from one great moment to the next. Think about how odd your years in high school were, and you've got just a hint of the insanity in store in an issue of BLUE MONDAY. [Plymouth]

ALSO THIS WEEK:

MIDNIGHT MOVER #1 (Oni Press)
Last year saw the comics-writing debut of crime novelist Gary Phillips with his Los Angeles-based miniseries SHOTCALLERZ. This week sees the start of his second mini for Oni, MIDNIGHT MOVER, which again focusses on the seamy underside of life in LA. Plenty of porn, pimpin' and paid-off policemen, no doubt. Gettosake.com's Jeremy Love and Jeff Wasson provide the visuals, which are perfect for a edgy and sleazy urban tale like this, and also make it that rarest of beasts - a street-level crime story that is genuinely cool without ever seeming to break a sweat. TOTAL SELL OUT TP (Image)
Yeah, so Brian Michael Bendis is Marvel's bitch now. Those guys own his sorry ass. Oh, sure, he still has POWERS, but let's face it, now he's a corporate whore, his best days are behind him. I mean, who even reads stoopid superhero crap like DAREDEVIL and ALIAS? Well, OK, I do. But, you know, Bendis wasn't always a hugely talented superstar comic creator. Once upon a time, he was a hugely talented absolute nobody. Relive those wonder years before he became a shill for The Man with this collection of his original FORTUNE AND GLORY-style cartoons, including collaborations with Warren Ellis, James Hudnall and others. Oh, and drink Coca-Cola. [Fisher]

BLOOD AND WATER (DC Vertigo)
I was a little unsure of this at first. Vertigo has done vampires before, with the VAMPS miniseries - entertaining enough, like an undemanding summer sleeper hit, but you'd expect a Vertigo book to play around more with the mythology and concept. So, will BLOOD AND WATER do that? Could it give a horror treatment rather than a blockbuster one? The fact that it's a Judd Winick script is a reason to be cheerful. He can take a kid genius humour book (BARRY WEEN)and give it darker moments, so we know he can mix moods well. The premise sounds good: A dying San Franciscan is made into a vampire, making the transformation a reason to party and celebrate (as opposed to moping around New Orleans and sulking) before things get darker. Think THE LOST BOYS with repercussions. The splendidly shadowy art is by Tomm Coker, and Brian Bolland provides super-slick covers. This could be well worth investigating. [German Bight]
